Treatment

SyringeThere is no cure for fetal alcohol syndrome and due to the large variability in the symptoms from individual to individual there is not a single treatment. Multiple types of treatment are recommended. Due to many of the symptoms overlapping with other diseases such as ADHD drugs such as Ritalin are prescribed to combat the inattentive behaviour often seen in these patients. Along with prescribed drugs behavioural therapies such as special education services and an understanding of developmental psychology often help with learning and behaviour.

More broadly though a better education into the dangers of drinking whilst pregnant would reduce the number of births with fetal alcohol syndrome.
