A drug called nicotinamide has been discovered by a team working in Cornell University in the United States that has been shown to protect the fetuses of pregnant mice from the exposure to ethanol. After exposure to ethanol the mice were injected with nicotinamide and the levels of neuronal loss were observed. It was seen that no more neurons were lost than in the normal brain. This is a great breakthrough in the field but the drug is still in its early stages and has to be checked for its own side effects if any on the fetus. Experts have stated that the discovery of this drug is not an excuse to drink whilst pregnant.
